Ming Thing
This table is a tall, waisted Ming table with humpbacked stretchers and a cloud rise detail at the bottom center of the aprons. I've also made these with hoofed feet which turn in at the bottom. Move your cursor over the image or click the image to see a version with hoofed feet. Use the back button to return to this page. This table is made of mahogany and the top is a bookmatched mottled mahogany slightly darker than the rest of the piece. A more authentic wood choice would be padauk which begins orange with black highlights and darkens to a distinctly purple-black color. I make my Ming tables taller than the usual western style table, usually in the 36" to 40" range. The height seems to suit them and is, I believe, stylistically accurate. The extra height brings vases and art objects closer to the eye and slims the otherwise straight, square legs.
